Frequently Asked Questions

Where & when would we meet, and for how long? The Life In Motion Counseling & Psychotherapy office is centrally located in Durham. Our address is 1200 Broad Street, Suite 103, in the Lane Professional Building, at the corner of Broad Street and Club Boulevard. We are directly across the street from the NC School of Science and Math. 

Individual sessions are 50 minutes, though we can arrange extended sessions any time. Daytime appointments are more available right now. I don't keep regular weekend office hours, but they can sometimes be useful if we are running into too many conflicts, or to make up for my being out of the office, for instance. I'll do what I can to work with your schedule.

How much does it cost? How much will insurance cover? Our first session will last an hour or so, and the fee is $115. After that, our regular, 50 min. sessions are $90.

Your insurance may pay a portion of this. Since I am an out-of-network provider, you'll need to find out what percentage reimbursement your policy provides for, and any deductible you might have to meet to be eligible for reimbursements. I am happy to provide you with documentation for you to file claims with your insurance company. Payment for our sessions is due at the time we meet, and I accept cash, personal checks, bank checks, Visa and MasterCard (debit or credit, including FSA cards).

Cancellation Policy: If you need to cancel or reschedule, you must let me know at least 24 hours in advance. Notification with less than 24 hours' notice will result in a $50 late cancellation fee, payable at our next meeting. In the case of a no-show, you will be charged the full session fee.

Sliding Scale: If worry about cost is standing between you and your entering counseling, I encourage you to give me a call so we can talk it over. It is important to me that people who want the work have access to it. If you feel ready and motivated about giving counseling a try, we can usually find a session fee that we are both okay with. 

A word about insurance: Insurance companies often restrict the number of sessions allowed, demand a great deal of paperwork, and require a significant amount of personal information about you to be shared with them. Insurance coverage also typically requires a diagnosis, which will become a permanent part of your medical record. So it's worth considering whether or not to use your insurance. If you have insurance, but would prefer not to use it for counseling and cannot afford the full fee, we will discuss what fee level and frequency of sessions could work well for us both.

How long does therapy take?

Well, that depends on several things. You may experience the relief you're looking for in as little as 2 or 3 sessions. Or you might decide to come for a couple of months, take a break, and come back later for further work. The nature of some issues is such that it may take a few months, a year, or more to reach a resolution you feel satisfied with. Some people re-enter therapy throughout their lives, because they find ways to grow in this process they haven't found in other modalities. It all depends on the depth and complexity of change you're seeking, the level of your motivation, and how much work you want to do at this particular time. We will work together to determine the best course of therapy for you.

If counseling is providing you with support as you go through a particularly challenging transition or experience, you may only want to schedule sessions till the intensity subsides. If you are faced with more lasting difficulties, resolving "unfinished business" from your past, or revamping long-standing patterns of thoughts and behaviors, our work together may last longer. We will always be looking into how you can change your situation, your relationship to your situation, or both.

The most important thing for you to know is that the decision of how long to be in therapy is always yours. We can talk it over, and I will offer you my recommendations if you want them, but you make the decision to continue with, take a hiatus from, or end your therapy.
