This is an invitation to anyone who is mourning the death of a beloved animal. Life In Motion Counseling's Pet Loss Grief Support Services will be forming a support group in March, here in Durham. A pet's death can be deeply painful, even devastating. Our relationships with our animal companions are among the purest, most unburdened relationships most of us will ever experience. The grief that attends this loss is a also a disenfranchised one: it is not given full validity or much recognized by our culture. Sometimes even close friends or family don't quite "get it" and may seem impatient with the length or intensity of our grieving.
If you are hurting , you may find that spending time with other bereaved pet owners can give you welcome support and solace. Grieving can be lonely, even confusing , and it certainly brings with it a multitude of emotions. Sharing your experiences and memories, hearing other people's stories, seeing that you're not alone in your sorrow can smooth some of the rough terrain of your grief journey.
If you think you or someone you know might appreciate a chance to take the kinds of comfort and reassurance a support group can offer, please don't hesitate to call me at (919) 649-2109. You'll have a chance to ask any questions you may have about the group, and I'll listen to what you hope the group can offer so we can see if it might meet some of your needs. For a discussion of "Why grief counseling?" and other information about Life In Motion's Pet Loss Grief Support Services, visit the site's Pet Loss page.
The next pet loss support group will be starting in mid- to late March. We'll meet for four consecutive weeks, 90 minutes/session, here in Durham (exact day/time and location TBA). The cost of the support group is $125. If you are unable to join us because of financial limitations, let me know. A limited number of discounts are available.
I hope you are not in distress, today, over the loss of a devoted animal friend. And if you are, I hope you'll consider joining us in March.

Hello from Life In Motion Counseling!
Hard to believe January is almost gone, and 2012 is off and running. As you can see, one of my New Year's resolutions is to get the Life In Motion blog officially underway. I will be posting thoughts, discoveries, and resources about a number of things: the process of change, what Gestalt therapy is (and isn't), stress relief techniques, career development and vocational callings, improving your relationships, how to communicate better, how to set healthy boundaries, becoming aware of the language we use and how it is supporting or impeding our growth and well-being.
And, since I adore quotes, there will be plenty of those throughout the posts, as well as recommendations for reading that artfully, sensitively captures something of what it's like to be a human being - all the glories, passions, hurts, and healings of that exquisite, flawed, and heroic state we're all in.
So for today, I leave you with words from Harriet Beecher Stowe, who reminds us, "When you get into a tight place and it seems you can't go on, hold on, for that is just the place and the time that the tide will turn."
Treat yourself gently,
